Police in Mathura have arrested 19 individuals for allegedly blocking a national highway and engaging in violent protests following the death of a local cow vigilante, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The arrests were made after demonstrators gathered in large numbers on the Delhi-Agra National Highway near the Kosi Kalan area, causing major traffic disruptions and clashes with law enforcement. Authorities reported that protesters threw stones and damaged vehicles when police attempted to clear the road. Several police personnel sustained injuries during the unrest.
Background: Death of the Cow Vigilante
The protests were triggered by the death of Chandrashekhar Das, widely known as “Farsa Wale Baba,” a 57-year-old man associated with cow protection activities in the region. He died early Saturday morning after being struck by a truck on the highway.
According to district officials, the incident occurred when the vigilante and his associates stopped a vehicle on suspicion of cattle smuggling. During dense fog conditions, another truck reportedly collided with the group, resulting in his death.
However, supporters of the deceased claimed the act was intentional and alleged involvement of cattle smugglers, which fueled anger and led to widespread demonstrations.
Protest Turns Violent
Thousands of supporters and local residents gathered on the highway to protest the incident. The demonstration escalated into violence when protesters blocked the road, leading to long traffic jams and disruption of public movement.
Police officials stated that the crowd resorted to stone-pelting and vandalism during attempts to disperse them. Government vehicles and a police outpost were damaged in the unrest.
Authorities also noted that the protests coincided with the visit of the President to the Mathura district, increasing security concerns and prompting swift police action to restore order.

Law enforcement agencies registered cases against several individuals involved in the violence and road blockade. The arrested persons have been sent to jail, and further investigation is underway to identify additional suspects.
Police also filed a separate case against the truck driver involved in the accident. Officials maintain that the death appears to be accidental, though the matter remains under investigation.
