A shocking case of fraud and exploitation in the name of superstition has surfaced from Badur village in Biloli tehsil of Nanded district in the state of Maharashtra. Local police have taken strict action against a self-proclaimed godman, identified as Gyaneshwar Kardre, popularly known as ‘Talwar Baba,’ for allegedly deceiving people and spreading fear through superstitious practices.

According to officials, the accused had been operating a so-called religious gathering, or “darbar,” for nearly four years. During these gatherings, he claimed that divine powers entered his body and that he possessed the ability to cure illnesses, solve family disputes, and protect people from evil forces. Authorities say these claims were used to manipulate vulnerable individuals and extract money and valuables from them.

How the Alleged Fraud Operated

Investigators revealed that the accused used dramatic methods to create fear and gain the trust of followers. He reportedly held a sword during rituals, which added to the sense of intimidation, particularly among women and children. Police believe that props such as lemons and other ritual items were used to convince people that supernatural forces were involved.

Victims were allegedly persuaded to offer cash, jewelry, and other valuables in exchange for solutions to personal problems. Over time, the accused built a network of followers who believed in his claims of supernatural powers.

Police Raid and Seizure of Evidence

The case came to light after authorities received complaints about suspicious activities at the location. Acting on these reports, police conducted a raid at the site and recovered several items believed to be associated with superstitious rituals.

During the operation, some supporters of the accused attempted to disrupt the police action and engaged in arguments with officers. Despite the resistance, law enforcement officials successfully detained the accused and secured evidence from the scene.

Legal Action Under Black Magic Law

Police have registered cases against the main accused and several associates under the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman Practices and Black Magic Act, a law designed to curb exploitation and harmful practices carried out in the name of superstition.

Individuals identified as Shivkant Melare, Nabaji Waghekar, and others have also been taken into custody for allegedly obstructing government work and supporting the illegal activities.

Authorities Urge Public Awareness

Officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and report suspicious activities involving superstition or fraudulent spiritual claims. They emphasized that strict laws are in place to protect people from exploitation and that awareness is key to preventing such incidents.

Police have stated that further investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests may be made if more evidence emerges.
